The Front Room Gallery is proud to present the SIXTH quadrennial "Ballot Show", which focuses on the American electoral system, and the overall notion of voting with a ballot. "The Ballot Show," held every 4 years since 2004, is inspired by the American election, and contemplates our antiquated electoral-college voting process.

The impetus for the first "Ballot Show” in 2004 was disillusionment with the shoddy way the 2000 election had been handled. Things didn't get better in the ensuing 20 years. As in all the previous iterations of the Ballot Show, the heart of it is questioning the US election system: electoral college, gerrymandering, etc. Basically, a 200+ year old system that needs updating.

Zoe Wetherall
”Living Lines” solo exhibition

Reception, Saturday September 14th, 4-6
September 14th–October 13th, 2024
Fri-Sun 12-5 & by Appt.

Front Room is proud to present a solo exhibition of photographs by Zoe Wetherall. This is Wetherall’s 2nd solo exhibition with Front Room Gallery and her first in our Hudson exhibition space. In this exhibition of semi-abstract aerial photographs, Wetherall focuses on the geometry created when manmade and natural objects come together. These photographs are taken from the basket of a hot air balloon. From a few hundred feet Wetherall photographs straight downward, excluding the horizon, sky, or any visual reference point. Wetherall sees subtle patterns hidden in architecture and landscape. MORE INFORMATION >>>>>

“My initial impression of this place was that it had sprung from the terroir of my drawings.”

-Patricia Smith

For the past year, Patricia Smith has been in residence at Château Beaurepaire in France’s Loire Valley. It is “château country” here (and also wine country), and the region’s rich history and architectural marvels have penetrated deeply into her work. The French have a word, “terroir”, which is often used in the context of wine production, meaning the unique composition of the soil, combined with the topography and climate of a particular area. But the term can also refer more poetically to a “sense of place”.

In an atmosphere of almost complete isolation because of the pandemic, Smith has had an immersive experience of “terroir”. In a new development in her practice, she brings a series of drawings outside to interact directly with the landscape and the architecture, and also creates hybrid works directly onto and into the terroir. Her approach is, like all her previous work, a kind of mapping, in that it traces connections between the actual and its concept, blurring the line of separation between the two.
