The Front Room Gallery is proud to present "Passages," a solo exhibition of paintings by Peggy Cyphers.  Titled “Passages," this exhibition showcases the unparalleled talent of Peggy Cyphers in capturing the intricate beauty of the environment in her paintings. Cyphers seamlessly integrates elements from diverse painting traditions into her large-scale abstract landscape paintings. Drawing inspiration from Chinese landscape paintings, Native American art, and Post-War abstraction, Cyphers creates dynamic and evocative artworks that bridge cultural and artistic boundaries. The fluid strokes and pouring with sand and paint have roots in the painting traditions of Chinese landscape paintings, Native American Art and PostWar Abstraction. Her large-scale abstract landscape paintings serve as meditations on the interconnectedness of cultures and ecosystems, inviting viewers to contemplate the beauty and fragility of the natural world. Cyphers' work exemplifies the transformative power of art to transcend boundaries and forge connections across time and space. 

With an ethereal blend of color, texture, and form, Peggy Cyphers transports viewers into a realm where the boundaries between art and nature blur seamlessly. Her monumental canvases, often reminiscent of canyons viewed from below, beckon audiences to explore the depths of their imagination while contemplating the fragility and grandeur of our natural world.

Through her distinctive artistic language, Peggy Cyphers invites viewers to contemplate the environmental challenges facing our planet today. Her burnt ochre cliff walls and contrasting blue skies serve as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness between humanity and the Earth, urging us to embrace our role as stewards of the environment.

Central to Cyphers' work is her fascination with the deep primordial past—the origins of life and the evolutionary processes that have shaped the Earth's ecosystems over millions of years. Through her art, she delves into the mysteries of ancient landscapes, drawing inspiration from geological formations, prehistoric flora and fauna, and the cyclical rhythms of nature.

In her exploration of entropy, Cyphers confronts the concept of disorder and decay as inherent aspects of the natural world. Peggy Cyphers has had over 30 solo exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe since. Cyphers has received many awards for her artwork, including the National Endowment for the Arts, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, Peter S. Reed Foundation, Pratt Faculty Fund, PS 1 MoMA Artist-in-Residence Award. Cyphers received residency fellowships to Tong Xian Art Residency Beijing, Santa Fe Art Institute, International Studio & Curatorial Program New York, Art Omi, Corporation of Yaddo, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Grin City Residency Iowa, and Triangle Artists' Workshop. Cyphers' work has been reviewed by The New York Times, Art in America, Artforum, New York Observer, Brooklyn Rail, Arts Magazine, among others. She is in museum and public collections including Smithsonian Institution, Seattle Art Museum, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Rutgers University Print Archives, Anchorage Museum of History and Art, Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, Columbia Museum of Art, Weatherspoon Art Gallery, New Mexico State University, Citibank, Chase, among others. Peggy Cyphers is currently a Professor of Fine Arts at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY.
