Front Room Gallery is proud to present, “Home Therapy”

In the time of COVID-19 we are all experiencing different effects of isolation and social distancing. Being home-bound can be a period of individual contemplation, family bonding, and household restructuring. These last weeks have brought to the forefront festering issues that have haunted this nation for years. People left the safety of their homes and took to the streets en masse to publicly voice the outrage which has long been internalized.

We return home to active discussions and plans for a a better future- as private actions are just as important as public ones. Debates and conversations at home are crucial in evolving and creating real social change.

“Home Therapy” features artists who are responding to their environments, the impact of coronavirus, and considering the time we have spent in isolation, to present an exhibition of artworks that commemorates that strength of individualism, family, and domestic life.

Curated with the idea of uplifting artworks, and works that help to cope with COVID isolation, this show presents artists working in new media due to their current studio situation and access to materials, artists responding to ideas of consumption (which is made more visible during this time), artists direct responses to the current situation, artists’ self-reflection and introspection, and works that look towards a more positive future.

A percentage of proceeds from this exhibition will be donated to the Cartwheel Initiative, an organization working towards positive social change, bringing the power of art to young people living in the aftermath of conflict and disaster.

scroll down for translation はじめまして。私は、瑛菜です。ステファニーからアートプロジェクトの件を聞きました。ぜひ、参加したいと思い現状に対する私の気持ちを書きます。私は、成田空港でグランドスタッフとして働いています。成田空港は、日本で1番大きい国際空港で、たくさんの人がいてフライトはほぼ毎日満席です。ですが、コロナウィルスが流行ってからは予約は毎日ほぼ0%。さらに、政府が入国に制限をかけ、帰国者は公共交通機関の使用は避けるようにということで、旅客に搭乗できない旨を伝えると「私はコロナじゃない！疑うのか！」「馬鹿野郎！」と言われ毎日傷つくことばかり。しかも、各地でトイレットペーパーや食べ物を求めて争いばかり。今こそ、お互いを思い合うべきなのに。 I work at Narita Airport in Japan as a customer service agent for a major airline. Narita is the biggest international airport in Japan so usually there are many passengers and full flights, but after the “corona shock” it’s practically empty. Like many countries, the Japanese government has put in place strict travel restrictions. Due to these government restrcitions, we are having to decline customers. They get frustrated, angry and take it out on me, “I don’t have Corona! You doubt me? You are such an idiot!” I hear it so many times in a day. Each day is a new challenge. And everywhere people fight for food, toilet paper, everything. I just want to say, “Let’s all calm down. We should be thinking of each other.” @i_am_talkative_0202

“I have gone back & forth over the last 48h trying to decide if I want to be yet another nurse on social media begging everyone to stay home and take this seriously.

Scrolling through social media the last week has been both so empowering and yet so frustrating. I see communities coming together. People adapting to work from home life. Encouragement. A lot of dog photos (more of these, please). I also see a lot of things that as an ICU nurse in this current environment make me want to scream.

COVID is here, people. It is in your community. It’s rampant in mine. If you would have asked me a month ago how I felt about this my view would have been completely different but it is real and it’s only getting started. STL is currently projected to hit its PEAK in May. This is essentially week ONE. My team has already seen death from this virus and it’s not in the patient population you would think. Positive cases are rapidly increasing just in my hospital alone. These patients are requiring some of the highest levels of ventilator support I have ever seen just to barely keep them oxygenated, if even that. Many of us are filled with dread that we will become vectors of this virus and unknowingly take it home to our spouses, kids, and loved ones. Many of us are terrified for our older nurses & physicians who have/will take care of these patients who have taught and mentored us because if they’re exposed we know they have a higher chance of a poor outcome. Many of us have bags packed in our trunk for the day we know we won’t be able to come home after a shift because of staffing needs.

I’m sorry that staying home is frustrating. I know not being able to go to Starbucks, your favorite wine bar, your hair/nail salon, etc isn’t fun. Please know that your ignorance to what this looks like from our side is very much so a privilege.
