As the days get shorter and the gold and amber leaves drift past us in the crisp Fall air, this exhibition takes a moment to reflect on this grand transition that we experience annually. For “Fall Transformation” we have selected works that visually explore seasonal change, Fall colors, and transformation (both personal and environmental). Autumn can be a time of reflection, gratitude and awareness; a time to take stock and prepare for the future. Artists in this show reflect on not only the seasonal colors, but the conceptual underpinnings that are relayed through nature's cycle of the seasons.
In addition to these intangible associations, Autumn is a tactile time, be it the dry leaves crunching under our feet, the feel of warm flannel or the chill of a cool Fall wind. The artists in this exhibition have interpreted these sensations in a multitude of ways, from directly referencing fallen leaves to more abstract discussions on transition.
Zoe Wetherall’s “Autumn Trees” is a photograph of trees from a hot air balloon directly above, golden leaves scattered around, a clean jogging path bisecting the trees. Thomas Broadbents “Season Marker,” an immaculate watercolor painting depicts an oriole with bright orange plumage perched on a leatherbound book with a crisp oak leaf pressed within its pages. Another bird, Jesse Lambert’s “Cardinal” sits aloft a branch amidst an airy scarlet backdrop in his ink and watercolor painting.
Phil Buehler’s “Water Well” is another world altogether. In Buehler’s photograph is a tidy oil painting, a landscape featuring a crimson farmhouse with orange trees in the foreground. The painting itself is hung on a wall in the former Greystone Psychiatric Hospital, on a wall of crackling paint in fuschia, teal and blond colors. Stephen Mallon’s photograph ”Boxcar UP 46623”, the graffiti-covered boxcar sits on the tracks in a wooded area, surrounded by golden trees and grass, little can we tell that it is moving 50mph. Petra Valentova’s painting “From the Garden 1,” is a leafy botanical print, with silhouettes of plants and leaves in a in warm gold, rust and walnut brown tempestuous background.
As the squirrel gathers nuts to prepare for the Winter, Autumn is a time to expand your art collection. For sales inquires please email info@frontroom.org
